Welcome to Philosophy under a Tree!

Course Number and Name: PHI 2010, Introduction to Philosophy
Course Number and Name: PHI 2600, Ethics

These courses offer an often times irreverent look at all things philosophical. We will have fun exploring the great thoughts of Western civilization. And we will see how the wisdom of the ages influences us today! While we will take a light-hearted view, still these things are serious considerations. At times you might feel uncomfortable with the ideas discussed. It's at these time when humor helps to make the surfing smoother!

Faculty Introduction

Speaking of history, here I am at the 50th Anniversary of BC. It was a proud moment, I’m part of history! But I wish I hadn’t commented on the size of our mascot’s beak… I got banished to the back!

Course Description & General Outcomes

These are Philosophy  courses for the searching soul.

Philosophy is like life, frustrating and hard to figure out at times but it can also be exhilarating and fun. I hope you will find Introduction to Philosophy and Ethics fun! I want you to memorize a few names and ideas. In fact, the PHI 2010 course midterm exam will be about your understanding of the five proofs for the existence of God (whether you believe or not, this is a great exercise in classic philosophical thought!) and the PHI 2600 course midterm exam will be about the Trolley problem. In addition, you may memorize, "The Philosophers Song" by Monty Python for extra credit.

In an attempt to engage you in the class, I will ask that you form a group of three or so fellow students and present two articles that you will hone with your group's support. You are free to search the Internet to see if someone else has written something on the article you're reading, etc. Of course, I want your papers to be your own work but you can use other sources, just site them in your paper.

I want us to create an atmosphere where we are a team (even though I might know slightly more about philosophy, I am a seeker just like you). We will have open and honest dialogue that includes respect (i.e., no name calling, accusations, verbal attacks, keeping the discussion and comments on the topic and not on the individual), keeping in mind that it is OK to disagree with each other.

Course Outcomes
I expect that you will (1) Come to class, this is the most important part of the course. In discussion true philosophical inquiry exists! (2) Do the work (e.g., the readings, discussions, quizzes and papers) honestly and promptly, (3) Participate actively, (4) Ask a question whenever something is confusing or unclear, (5) Respect each other, (6) Support/share with each other, (7) Learn a lot, and (8) Have fun!
